What Do You Do With Your Stuff While Relocating To Another Country

Sometimes rush is not an option, but a need of an hour. Situations go out of your control and indeed call for prompt decisions and action. Moving abroad in an emergency is one of the familiar examples of such a demanding situation. It is equally inspiring and frustrating at the same time. In that case, a quick response and an active mind can be of extensive help.

There are many reasons behind urgent relocation to an unfamiliar country (for example, family emergency, a sudden change in financial status, retirement, or a great job opportunity in a new location, etc.). No matter what, you have to use all your intelligence and energy for a trouble-free and smooth experience.
I have lived in two countries in my career, Italy and the US. No matter which country I was moving, I always followed these steps to avoid the silly yet serious mistakes and lower the huge stress off the heavy moving preparations. Here are the effective strategies for emergency moving to stay ahead of things.

Choose the Right Approach
No matter how little time you are running out until the day of moving, panicking does not make sense. Staying calm on your planning can indicate the difference between success and failure of relocation. So, be sure to plan in advance and focus on the complex tasks and get it done as soon as possible. Always prepare for any uncertain change in your life. No time to waste worrying about the events which led you to move in an emergency or uncertainties in the future? Simply start the preparations ASAP.

Organize and Pack Your Belongings in Advance
Preparing and organizing the items for relocation is a very tiring and time-consuming job when moving your house. You have to check your belongings and decide what you desire to carry and what to do with others that you no longer need in your new home. For example, you may donate to charity, sell them, give away to neighbors or friends, or just discard them.

When it comes to sort out your stuff, prepare a comprehensive list of your inventory that you want to relocate. This process can save a lot of time once your list will be prepared. You can have better insight into your needs (amount and type of packing supplies, etc.). It will help you get a more accurate estimate of the final costs of relocation and determine the value of your stuff and liability coverage you can get. In case some of your belongings get damaged, lost or stolen in transit, you will have, at least, valid evidence that will help.

According to the amount of time you have before moving, you can at least, pre-pack some of your belongings, such as personal items and valuables that are easy to pack and something you would not entrust to anyone else. It is highly recommended to hire professionals who have the expertise to take care of your large households delicate items. You will not have that much time to pack bulky and delicate items safely and efficiently, just like the emergency movers. Be sure to gather all the documentation and all the essential items you need to survive for days without the rest of your valuable households until they get delivered.

Consider Visa Requirements
If you have plans to stay in a country for the long term, I strongly recommend you to double check visa requirements for your destination country. In case you have to move abroad in an emergency due to work, you may not have to worry about residency. However, you still need to identify actual requirements. I am telling you this because I also had trouble when I was stopped at airports en route because I was not quite sure of visa requirements.

Intimate your bank that you are moving
Be sure to tell all the banks where you have an account that you are leaving your home country. Sometimes my bank sets an alert on one card and no other. Therefore, I personally call the customer support and talk to them directly. There is nothing worse than getting your account sealed when you move to a new country.

Take care of documentation
After being settled in your new country, it is time to change your postal address, car registration number, and driver’s license. However, there are some more requirements you need to fulfill before moving –

1. Inform your landlord and your employer about your emergency relocation ASAP and take care of all the paperwork related to it (such as lease agreements and end contracts, letters of reference, etc.).
2. Contact your family doctor and children’s school and get all the significant medical records and school-leaving certificate.
3. Keep your financial documents on track (notify your Credit Card Company, insurer, and transfer bank accounts.).
4. Transfer your utilities.
5. Arrange for the relocation of your motor vehicles and pets.
6. If you are about to drive to your destination, get your car serviced or book flight tickets for your trip.

Keep your time on the track
When there are only a few days left before you move, time start ticking faster. Hence, you should plan and organize every single minute of the hour for least havoc and maximum efficiency. I strongly suggest you prioritize your moving jobs, customize moving schedule, and set proper deadlines to complete all the important work on time (for example, leave easier and less important tasks for last). Be specific and set your goals. Whenever needed, take proper measures to relieve your stress of moving. Cross mark a task when completed. It will assist you to ensure that you are going on the right path.

Seek Professional Help
You may not be capable to perform sudden relocation on your own. If you have had relocated before or moving locally, there is no big deal. If you have friends who can be there for you in every stage of the process, be it packing or transporting to a new location, you can move effortlessly.

On the other side, if you are moving abroad on a brief note, it is always sensible to hire a professional mover. They have experienced professionals to handle all your relocation needs in the last moment with efficiency, speed, and safety.
